Brain Dominance Profile

ICOL uses the Brain Dominance Profile created by Dr. Carla Hannaford, a neuroscientist and educator for Brain Gym. The one hour assessment establishes left or right brain dominance, and helps everyone understand your child’s preferred thinking style and stress reactions. Each half of the brain processes information in a specific way. A left brained or Logic Dominant individual processes details, parts and thinks in linear step-by-step manner. A right brained or Gestalt Dominant person processes things as a whole, deals with images, rhythm, emotion and intuition.

The assessment further determines dominant eye, ear, hand, and foot. The brain has a cross over pattern and each side of the brain controls the opposite of the body. There are 32 different ways the dominant hemisphere can be linked up to the dominant eye, ear, hand and foot. In order to process information in an efficient integrated state it is optimum to have the dominant eye, hand, foot, and ear opposite to the brain hemisphere dominance.

In times of new learning or stress the non dominant side greatly decreases its functioning leaving the dominant brain to carry on primary functioning. If the eye, hand, foot, or ear is on the same side as the brain dominance that sense is shut off and unable to process information.

ICOL uses the assessment for all participants. It is completed in an hour session. The individual is assigned a profile, which provides information on how that person takes in, assimilates, and processes information. It also explains how that individual responds to and expresses new learning. It is a valuable tool for students, parents, teachers, and counselors.
